CYNTHIA KING PhD

Cynthia King has over 30 years of experience as a communication and organizational development consultant, facilitator, speaker, and trainer. She is the founder and principal of Communication Catalysts, an organizational consulting firm, and a founding partner in The Wisdom Way, through which she offers women’s retreats and guides ceremonies.

Cynthia has consulted with a wide variety of government agencies, small family and large multinational corporations, nonprofit/social profit organizations, educational institutions, and community groups on a range of key organizational topics including:

• Interpersonal, organizational, and intercultural communication

• Managing change and transitions (both personal & organizational)

• Transforming conflicts: moving from power-over to power-with

• Co-creating collaborative teams, partnerships, and organizations

• Building personal and collective leadership capacity

• Facilitator training, meetings management, decision-making, & strategic planning

• Strategic Futuring, particularly using Appreciative Inquiry

Cynthia’s book, Creating Partnerships: Unleashing Collaborative Power in the Workplace (2005), is available through Amazon.com and a variety of independent booksellers. She also produced the companion Creating Partnerships: A Field Guide for Collaboration (2010), which provides training materials for many of the topics listed above. Cynthia has been a keynote speaker at a range of national and international conferences. Her research interests focus primarily on organizational mythology, communication strategies for peacemaking, and the interplay between masculine and feminine archetypes as we navigate life transitions.

Dr King currently teaches courses for the Communication and University Programs at California State University Channel Islands. Prior to her teaching and consulting work, Dr King served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, Central America. She has taught communication courses at California State University, Chico, Feather River College, Antioch University, Santa Barbara, and Pacifica Graduate Institute, where she taught Practices of Dialogue, Collaboration and Reconciliation, Leadership Skills for Social Justice, Appreciative Inquiry, and has served on a number of dissertation committees. She also taught Creating Partnership Organisations at Schumacher College in southern England, and has also worked in Italy, Japan, and Australia. Dr King holds an MA degree in Intercultural Communication and a Doctorate in Mythology and Depth Psychology, with an emphasis on organizational applications. She is a certified mediator who is experienced in community and organizational conflict transformation. Dr King is active in community volunteer work, and is currently President of the Board for One Step a la Vez, a nonprofit teen center located in Fillmore, California.
